The Great Summer Uniform Switch Up: Don’t Forget the Name Labels!

There is a moment every year when the thick winter jumper is quietly retired, tights go into hibernation, and the school gates bloom with gingham dresses and short sleeved polos.

The summer uniform switch up has begun. ☀️

It feels lighter. Brighter. Slightly less muddy. But it also comes with one familiar problem: a whole new batch of clothes and accessories that look exactly like everyone else’s.

If you have just unpacked last year’s summer uniform or bought a fresh set for the new term, now is the perfect time to think about labelling properly.

Step 1: Design and order your name labels and stickers

Step 2: Apply to care labels, direct to fabric or stick to lunch boxes, water bottles etc...

Step 3: Double check "The Ultimate Quick Summer Label Checklist" to make sure you haven't missed anything!

Step 4: Relax 🌞

Why More Uniform Gets Lost in Summer

It sounds unlikely, but lighter clothing can be easier to misplace.

Here’s why:

🧥   Cardigans and jumpers are taken off more often

🥼   Blazers are deemed too warm and often get left on the back of chairs

🏃‍♀️   PE lessons move outdoors

🧢   Sun hats and caps get hastily shoved in trays and fall off of pegs

🥤   Water bottles are filled more regularly increasing the chance of them being left at the water dispenser

Items are removed, carried, dropped, swapped and forgotten, but clear, long term labelling can make all the difference.

The Ultimate Quick Summer Label Checklist 📋

Summer at school is a completely different environment. Suddenly, the winter coat gets shelved to be replaced by light-weight jackets and sun hats. Not only that, but the children seem to turn feral. They go into school with everything and come home with nothing because they’re hot, sticky and over-stimulated.  It’s easy to forget which new summer-specific additions are needed so we’ve compiled a simple checklist, guaranteed to give you a lightbulb moment or two! We call this the "6 S's!"

⃣         Sun hats and caps

They get taken off at playtime, stuffed into trays and swapped accidentally with alarming ease. If bought last minute, it’s likely that many in the class will look the same so best to make sure these are labelled to prevent the need to buy more than 1 for the summer term.

⃣        Summer Dresses and Short Sleeve Polos

Lightweight gingham dresses and short sleeve polos are swapped more often because children overheat and peel layers off – annoyingly they all look almost identical on a peg!

⃣        Shorts

Grey school shorts or PE shorts are too easily mixed up in changing rooms!

⃣        Sports Day Kit

Extra T shirts. House colour tops. Spare socks. The “extra fast” new trainers. These are brought in for one specific day and often never seen again unless labelled clearly!

⃣        Suncream

Many schools ask for labelled sun cream bottles.
Without a name, it becomes communal by accident, or worse – not usable.

💡 TIP: Label both the bottle and the lid if possible, as many parents will use the same popular brands.

⃣        Sunglasses

Some schools allow basic sunglasses during very bright weather. Small. Expensive. Very easy to misplace. Just stick a name label to the inside of the arm of the sunglasses and hey presto - easily spotted.

Save Money Before the End of the School Year

Summer term can be expensive. School trips, sports days, end of year events…

Replacing lost uniform in June feels particularly frustrating when you know it only needs to last a few more weeks.

Clear, durable name labels dramatically increase the chances of misplaced items being returned quickly. Fewer replacements. Less waste. Less stress.

That being said, if you do need to purchase some last minute summer add-ons, check out your school’s ‘Pre-loved’ cupboard or head to Vinted/Facebook marketplace for some bargains! For tips on smart labelling when selling on, check out our blog here.

Make the Switch Simple

The seasonal uniform change is the perfect reminder to refresh your labelling.

Tiger Tags make it easy to:

  • Label high volumes of items quickly and easily
  • Protect privacy by being removable if needed
  • Maintain resale value
  • Help keep children accountable for their own belongings

So, as the winter layers are packed away and the summer dresses and shorts come out, make sure everything is ready for the term ahead.

Because sunshine is lovely.
Sports day is fun.

But buying the same cardigan twice in one term is not. 🐯☀️
